Saving people, Hunting things, The family business.

Supernatural aired in 2005 and millions been hooked ever since. Sam and Dean Winchester are two brothers that cross the country fighting monsters, demons and evil spirits. Various episodes show more than just the negative aspects assumed with a show about the supernatural. The show is relatable to real life because of your relationship with family and friends that are considered family, meaningful moments between the brothers and how the characters always find humor in the worst situation.

The first relatable thing in Supernatural is as Dean says “Just cause you’re blood doesn’t make you family. You have to earn it”. (“And then there were none”) During this series it shows a lot of broken people coming together and even if they aren’t blood related they still love each other like they are. Most of the people in the show become hunters because they’ve experienced some kind of tragedy due to a supernatural circumstance or being. Bobby Singer is a person that has been with the boys practically their whole life. He raised them and taught them what all they needed to know when their father John was off hunting. In one episode John Winchester wanted Bobby Singer to teach Dean to practice with a shotgun but instead he took him to play catch in the park. (“Death’s Door”) Throughout the show the Winchester brothers meet all kinds of interesting creatures. In the show you have an angel named Castiel and he would die/ kill for the brothers and he knows they would do the same for him. An example of this is during the apocalypse Castiel interferes trying to save Sam and Lucifer kills him. (“Swan Song”) Most people can relate to these relationships with the people they call their second family as well as people they are related to by blood.

The second reason Supernatural is appealing would be because of their endless brotherly moments. Throughout the series Sam and Dean really depend on each other to keep themselves alive and honest. It comes to a point where both would be willing to sacrifice themselves to save their brother and that happens on numerous occasions. An example of this would be Dean selling his soul to bring Sam back to life after he was stabbed in the back. (“All hell breaks loose: Part 1”) It just goes to show that no matter what happens they can always depend on each other even when they have no one else. It seems in the show that the boys always have their most vulnerable moments in the car after finishing a case. This is relatable to real life because no matter what age group you are in you have to have someone to confide in and depend on to be able to trust and talk to.

The third reason the show is engaging are the pop culture references, it adds a lightness to the show along with humor so it’s not all doom and gloom. Throughout all the episodes of Supernatural Dean uses a lot of pop culture references to lighten the mood especially when they’re in a sticky situation. One episode they get in this horrible crash and Dean is an invisible ghost and he’s watching his brother and father fight so he hits the glass that then proceeds to slam against the wall breaking and he looks up amazed and says “Dude, I full on swayz’ed that mother.(“In my time of Dying”) Clearly if you’ve ever seen Ghost you’d know exactly what he was talking about. Another reference would be Kevin Tran(Prophet of the Lord) shooting an arrow at Dean and he states “Cause you’re a crappy shot, Katniss”.(“Devil May Care”)Clearly this is from the hunger games. Pop culture references are relatable because we see them and use them all the time even if we don’t mean to.

In conclusion, in the words of Calliope, the muse goddess, “Supernatural has everything. Life, death, resurrection, redemption—but above all, family. All set to music you can really tap your toe to. It isn’t some meandering piece of genre dreck, It’s… epic.” (“Fan Fiction”) If you like a good laugh and a storyline that has so much more than just fighting evil creatures than Supernatural is for you.
